Silverlight ja saavutettavuus

Microsoftin Flash-killer, Silverlight, on vielä monille tuiki tuntematon väline, mutta tekniikka tekee tuloaan kovalla vauhdilla.

Ensimmäinen versio julkaistiin viime vuonna ja toinen versio on luvassa ensi kesänä. Silverlight 1.0 on paitsi saavutettavuuden osalta, myös muiltakin ominaisuuksiltaan varsin alkeellinen, mutta tuleva 2.0 -versio tuo hyviä uutisia myös saavutettavuusnäkökulmaan.

Huonona puolena voitaneen jo etukäteen ennustaa, että Silverlight-sovellusten saavutettavuus ei tule olemaan erityisen korkealla tasolla, sillä kun vastuu toteutuksesta jää tekijälle, se jätetään usein toteuttamatta kokonaan.

Aktiiviselle saavutettavuuden edistämiselle on siis jatkossakin kysyntää.

Amazonista saavutettava

Maailmalta kuuluu mukavia uutisia, kun Amazonin verkkokauppaan ollaan tekemässä perusparannusta, jonka myötä siitä tulee saavutettava kesäkuun loppuun mennessä:

”The National Federation of the Blind and online retailer Amazon, Inc., have announced that work to make Amazon.com fully accessible to blind computer users is to be completed by June 30, 2008. In March of 2007, Amazon entered into a technology development agreement with the National Federation of the Blind pursuant to which Amazon was to attempt to make Amazon.com fully accessible by December 31, 2007.

Because of the complexity of the task, it was recognized that this was an ambitious goal and that problems might be encountered; accordingly, the agreement provided that Amazon could have a six-month extension, if necessary, to complete work on making its Web site fully accessible to blind computer users. Amazon’s Web site has improved; nonetheless, Amazon recognizes that it is not yet fully accessible. Amazon has indicated that it will complete the task within the extended period.”

Operan pääpomo Håkon Wium Lie on kirjoittanut avoimen kirjeen verkon kehittäjäyhteisölle, jossa hän kertoo miksi Opera on valittanut Microsoftin monopoliaseman väärinkäytöstä Euroopan komission tuomioistuimeen:

”Opera has filed a formal complaint with the European Commission to force Microsoft to support open Web standards in its Web browser, Internet Explorer. We believe that Microsoft has harmed Web standards by refusing to support them; Microsoft often participates in creating Web standards, promoting them, and even promising to implement them. Despite their talent, however, they refuse to support Web standards correctly. For example, Internet Explorer is the only modern Web browser that does not support Acid2.

Opera has also requested that Microsoft frees Internet Explorer from the Windows platform. We feel that they have used their market dominating position to limit a genuine choice of browsers on the Web for their own commercial gain.”

Liian usein kaikki saavutettavuuteen liittyvät apuohjelmat ja välineet toimivat vain Windowsissa. Kuitenkin myös Mac-koneilla voidaan tuoda valonpilkahduksia saavutettavuudesta ja esteettömyydestä riippuvaisten ihmisten arkeen.

Assistiveware tarjoaa sarjan podcasteja, joissa Mac-tietokoneet auttavat esteellisiä käyttäjiä suoriutumaan arjen askareista ja vaativimmistakin tehtävistä.
